Each team that travels to India uses their own special gifts to make each children's program a unique and exciting event. Can you imagine 500 little faces entranced by a pantomime? Laughing hysterically at a puppet show? Enthusiastically bouncing balls around a 24-foot parachute? Imagine their surprise when each child is given a balloon animal to take home!
In villages throughout India, hurting people must travel many miles on foot, bicycle or bus to receive even the most basic medical attention. Even if they can make it to a doctor, often they don't have the funds to buy the medicine necessary. Through friends of Comforter Action Mission Trust (CAMT), we are able to bring the doctor and medical supplies to these villages—along with the message of hope.
Word is spread by mouth of the doctor's arrival that morning, and quickly the folks start lining up. Some will wait all day for their chance to be seen. After the doctor gives her diagnosis and prescription, the villagers walk to the medicine table where their prescription is filled immediately.
Throughout the country of India , there are over 700,000 small, tribal villages. This is one of them.
Children are unable to go to school, as they either have to care for younger siblings or earn a living. Young children are left at home with elderly people or disabled persons without proper care or food to eat. They stay hungry through the day and wait for their parents to bring some food in the evening. Unfortunately, food doesn't always come. Many parents are alcoholics, and if they find work for the day, they will often spend their money on themselves. Children face abuse from their parents and from others since they are left unprotected for a large part of the day. Because of this difficult situation, infanticide is prevalent in some areas as the parents are unable to provide for their children. Those who do survive develop skin diseases due to lack of cleanliness or other medical problems that are left untreated.
One method of helping these children might be pulling them out of their homes and bringing them to orphanages where they will be fed and cared for. However, this only serves to perpetuate the intrinsic problems in these villages. CAMT has set up a Adopt-A-Village project. This ministry has three goals:
When a village is adopted, land is purchased, a community center built and trained CAMT staff move into the village to bless the children and their families. The children are cared for during the day and also given at least one nutritious meal daily along with study materials, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and clothing. They are trained in hygiene and taught beginning skills in reading and writing, and older children are sent to school. Medical care is also provided regularly.
Reaching India one village at a time...
The first Tailoring Institute was started in 1996 to teach poor and needy women how to sew to give them a trade they can take back to their homes and earn money for their families. The women attend classes five days a week for six months and receive a diploma upon completion of the course. With this skill, women have been able to start their own businesses in their villages or get jobs in uniform factories or tailoring shops.
The institutes are established in villages around Southern India and new shools are started as needed and when funds are available. As of today, there are four institutes operating. Scholarships and micro-loans are available for women to receive a sewing machine. With a contribution of $ 100 you can make a difference in the life of someone, and make this dream a reality for one of the students.
